In TNG episode 1, Encounter at Farpoint, we see Commander Riker learn how to use the ship’s computer to track someone down (in this case, Data). What I liked about this scene was it showed how the computer screens that run the length of the halls could be used for navigational purposes.
My point: While I personally would have plenty of fun wondering the ship aimlessly, sometimes users will want to get to a certain place and might find themselves lost while trying to get there. I’m sure you have a plan for assisting the user, Jason, but I wanted to bring this scene with Will Riker to your mind.
My suggestion: Rather than have some mini map or quick-travel list to get around, keep the experience immersive and ask the ships computer for help. You could go up to any wall in the halls and interact with it, and a list of locations will display. Then, once you pick a place to go, the dotted moving line could lead you there.
Perhaps this idea may have already been obvious, but when I thought of it I realize it would fit so perfectly for this project and I just had to make a thread for it to ensure the idea was out there.
Anyone else like this idea? Let me know!
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I’m a big fan of your project, Jason. I can’t wait to try it for myself when it’s finished!
