I suspect that it’d be a total nightmare to have other 3D modelers working on the actual ship, especially untested ones, unless there was a few that you really trusted and were confident of their quality and could collaborate with closely. But I’m sure that there’d be people willing to do a bit of modelling for you for standalone props and things; a thread where you could farm out things like ‘here’s a screencap of Lwaxanna’s rad 90s chair, I want this texture resolution and this rough polycount in this format’ and people could take tasks and email the model to you.
And for people like me with no 3D skills but some 2D, maybe we could help you out making unique LCARS displays for various rooms and things on the ship?
Of course, this way you’d be free to turn down anything that doesn’t meet your standards.
Another idea might be a gallery we could all contribute unique sets and shots of the ship (bits like the little sitting area from Birthright, or the season one corridors with wall decorations) or individuals quarters, so that you’d have a big library of every variation ever onscreen. And scans and things of harder-to-find concept art. If you, you know, haven’t comprehensively done all that already, which I rather suspect you have.
Any other ways we could help – we’re all here and we’re all huge fans, and Trek fans are legendary for being happy to throw in their time and effort. Just ask!
Truly fantastic work you’ve done so far. I have a fair amount of experience with 3D modeling in 3DS MAX and would be happy to contribute any freetime I have to building props of any kind. Hyposprays to Shuttles. I already have a small database of StarTrek objects (storage containers, medical equipment, cups, etc) that I have made. I have very little experience with texturing however and maybe Bellerophon and I could put the pieces together.
I am thinking this could be an opportunity for those new to 3D modeling to contribute. The Enterprise-D will have hundreds, if not thousands of compartments that are nearly identical (i.e. basic crew quarters, labeled A through N-Type rooms in the Sternbach blueprints). Site supporters could contribute X dollars to “own” one of these sets of quarters and personalize it (with some community guidelines of course), utilizing either free or purchased modeling software. This can free up Jason and perhaps a few other professionals to put their creative energy into the unique and unseen aspects of the ship, such as the cetacean areas or the truly large medical sections.
Like @Bellerophon and @Kelton have already done, I freely offer my skills with 3ds Max, Maya, Mudbox, Zbrush, etc. I also have recently begun digging into coding with Unreal Engine & Unity, already having a solid foundation in several programming languages. Feel free to check out some renders I’ve done at my site (chrismcgee.info) and contact me if I can help in any with with the project.
Ways to help, well having seen this so far I have downloaded the Unreal Engine with the thought of learning a few of the skills, possibly to add to this.
As well as inspired to render a few designs of my own that have been filed in the back of my memory.
